This paper describes the development of a new form of complete signal descriptor for the analysis of non-stationary signals, such as speech and images. The descriptor is invertible, fast to compute and employs multiple resolutions of analysis, providing an optimal (minimum uncertainty) representation of a signal at all resolutions intermediate between the original domain (time or space) and the corresponding frequency domain. The application of the descriptor to image analysis is illustrated with some examples.
