The "Right" Design

• Lots of little phases:

  • read file into character array
  • translate escapes (Unicode, trigraphs)
  • standardise platform dependent line endings
  • expand tabs
  • split into token strings (and classify)
  • enter tokens into symbol table
  • parse

• Experiment shows 2&3 shouldn't be combined
