This is useful in situations where bandwidth for data is limited (such as the World-Wide Web) and an exact version of the image is not important. Only the outline shape and a label need to be transmitted for each region. During reconstruction, this label (road, house, wall etc) is used to recreate generic objects of the correct size. Shown is the original image and a cartoon-like reconstruction of it using only a fraction of the data. Computer Graphics techniques have been used to add realistic, fractal textures to the trees and the sky. Our research is based on a large database of natural images which has been created in conjunction with British Aerospace Sowerby Research Centre.
