From August 2006 Prof Nigel Smart takes over as being Head of Department of
Computer Science from Prof David May. Nigel joined the University in 2000
after spending some time working for Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Bristol.
His research interests lie mainly in the area of asymmetric cryptography.
Nigel is keen to build on the success of David May in building up the
research and teaching strengths of the department in a way which differentiates
what Bristol has to offer compared with our competitors.
David May is now able to devote more time and energy to pursuing his research
interests in Computer Architecture and other areas of Computer Science.
He is also able to push forward the other agendas within the
University which he has helped build, in particular our new
High Performance Computing Initiative
