We are proud to announce that Jason Mayes has been shortlisted for the IET Award for the Best IT Student judged by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Jason graduated in July 2008 with a First-class honours classification. He was nominated for this award not only for his high level of academic achievement but also for his enthusiasm and lasting contribution to the department.

A visiting fellow of the Dept of Computer Science, Fred Homewood, has developed with his new company a pioneering technology to radically improve the efficiency of high-performance data centres across the world. The company is based in the University of Bristol's SETsquared Business Acceleration Centre, which supports start-up companies.

Ground-breaking technology that will enable biologists to identify and monitor large numbers of endangered animals, from butterflies to whales, without being captured, will be shown to the public for the first time at this year's Royal Society Summer Science exhibition [30 June to 3 July].

Dr Walterio Mayol-Cuevas has been awarded a HP Innovation Research Award 2008 as principal investigator on a research collaboration with HP's central research arm.
Only 41 academics from around the world received one of these awards out of more than 450 applications. A PhD Studentship is available and applications are open until mid September 2008.

Last week we said goodbye to our class of 2008. After the degree ceremony the department hosted a celebratory lunch. Prizes were given out, not only to the graduates but to prize winners in all years of our programmes. We were particularly pleased that a number of our industrial sponsors could also attend.

Mike Fraser, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science, will act as program co-chair of the ACM Conference on Tangible and Embedded Interaction. Dr. Fraser has been invited to chair by Microsoft Research who hosting the event. This conference is the premier venue for international researchers interested in the physical manipulation of digital information.

The National Student Survey in 2008 showed Bristol Computer Science department doing exceptionally well, including 90% student satisfaction.
