Today the class of 2007 graduated, after the main ceremony we had a reception in the department where prizes were given out. This was a great opportunity for students to thank each other for the excellent time that they had in the department, and also a time for staff to thank students for all their hard work and contribution to the life of the department.

RCUK Academic Fellowships in Exabyte Informatics

The University of Bristol is offering two RCUK Academic Fellowships in the area of Exabyte Informatics. The main responsibility of the Research Fellows is to advance the state of the art in Exabyte Informatics by carrying out world-class research on key research topics. Supported by the UK Research Councils, RCUK Fellowships lead to a permanent academic position after five years.

Bristol Scientist To Chair Major Data Mining Conference

Professor Peter Flach is to co-chair the Program Committee of the 2009 Knowledge Discovery in Databases conference. The ACM KDD conference is the major data mining conference world-wide. In 2009 it will be held in Paris, the first time out of North-America since its inception as an annual conference in 1995.

ILP Application Prize and Best Student Paper Awards

A paper written by Dr. Kerstin Eder, Professor Peter Flach and Hsiou-Wen Hsueh, has won the "ILP 2006 Application Prize" and the "Best Student Paper" Awards.

Widening participation through hands-on robot programming

As part of the department's commitment to widening participation, an event was held during February in which students, aged 15-17, experimented with robot programming and task solving. It was an exciting 2hrs of learning and fun, and we look forward to repeating the event in the future.

Hi-Tec Honorary Degrees

Amongst 12 Honorary Degrees to be awarded in the next week there are two representatives from high technology industries. Professor David Milne and Mr Pasquale Pistorio will both be receiving honorary Doctorates of Engineering.

Departmental Open Day, Thursday 28th June

Everyone is welcome to attend a departmental Open Day on Thursday the 28th of June. This day will allow you to learn more about what Computer Science involves at an undergraduate level. As you may already know, this is quite different from the kind of IT that is typically taught at school level and in our view, is a much more rewarding subject.

New Computer Science Society Formed

Computer Science students recently united in the formation of a society they could call their very own. Following the initiative of Daniel Brownridge and John Bartholomew, the society, now christened CSS by its elected executive body, has met with enormous enthusiasm from staff and students alike.

Bristol Researcher's work featured in New Scientist

Dr Walterio Mayol-Cuevas's work on shoulder worn cameras has featured in New Scientist. The work automatically tracks head movements and can recognise hand gestures.

New Misys Scholarships Now Available

The Misys Charitable Foundation will soon be considering a new round of candidates for its scholarships, designed to help students with a clear financial need reach their potential. The scholarships are open to Computer Science students, and those studying a degree which includes a strong component of IT, who have completed their first year.
