Funding and Scholarships for PhD by Research
Details of tuition fees are available from the Academic Registry webpages: http://www.bris.ac.uk/academicregistry/fees/ .
UK Students
Research Studentships are awarded by Research Councils (EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC etc.), and on rare occasions by Sponsoring Companies or the University of Bristol. Students must hold a 1st Class or 2.1 honours degree to be eligible to hold a studentship. A lower degree may be augmented by a subsequent MSc degree to achieve eligibility. Studentships are normally awarded for a period of three years and Students are expected to present a PhD thesis within 4 years of the commencement of their award. Research assistant posts are sometimes available to candidates for higher degrees.

EU Students
European Union students are treated in the same way as UK students and are generally eligible for UK scholarships if they hold a first degree from a British University. Note that some governmental scholarships require you to be ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 2 years before the start of the course. To be ordinarily resident means to hold a job and pay taxes to the British Government. A Full-Time student is NOT considered to be ordinarily resident. EU postgraduate students can however apply for a research assistantship in the same way a UK student would, if one is available.

Overseas students should note that the Fees for overseas students (but not from EC countries) are higher than those for UK students.
