Admission to Postgraduate Research leading to a PhD
There are opportunities for postgraduate research leading to a PhD in Computer Science. In general, the selection to the PhD program is based upon the following criteria:
- BSc in Computer Science (usually 2.1 or higher) or similar,
- satisfactory references, and
- availability of a suitable adviser.
UK Students
Research Studentships are awarded by Research Councils (EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC etc.), and on rare occasions by Sponsoring Companies or the University of Bristol. Students must hold a 1st Class or 2.1 honours degree to be eligible to hold a studentship.
A lower degree may be augmented by a subsequent MSc degree to achieve
eligibility. Studentships are normally awarded for a period of three
years and Students are expected to present a PhD thesis within 4 years
of the commencement of their award. Research assistant posts are sometimes available
to candidates for higher degrees.

EU Students
European Union students are treated in the same way as UK students and are generally eligible for UK scholarships if they hold a first degree from a British University. Note that some governmental scholarships require you to be ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 2 years before the start of the course. To be ordinarily resident means to hold a job and pay taxes to the British Government. A Full-Time student is NOT considered to be ordinarily resident! EU post-graduate students can however apply for a research assistantship in the same way a UK student would, if one isavailable.
