Computing Resources
Our student laboratories have over 100 workstations which ensures that all students have access to an individual computer during scheduled classes. We have a Gigabit network which connects over 300 computers with central servers and a total storage capacity of over five TBytes. The halls of residence are also connected, allowing full access to the internet, online resources and computing facilities. We also support a roaming wireless network to provide access from a laptop anywhere on the campus.

Communication between staff and students centres around our website and email. Teaching material and resources are all available online, and all coursework is submitted electronically, This gives the flexibility to organise your work and time in a way that best suits you. Latest marks and feedback are also available online and you can always contact your Tutor and other staff by email.

We also have laboratories with specialist equipment. A single-seat motion pod is used for third-year group projects. It is driven by four PCs that can be programmed to provide synchronised audio, graphics and motion. In the wearable computing laboratory we have access to ten wearable computers for use by third and fourth-year project students. Computer Systems Engineering students also have access to a state-of-the-art electronics laboratory.

HDL Verification: Mentor Graphics Software

We also make use of high-end software tools to support our Teaching. For example, we use Verilog in our computer architecture teaching, a design system used widely in microelectronic industry, and we use Alias Wavefront’s Maya in our computer graphics units, character animation software used throughout the broadcast, films and gaming industries. As well as allowing us to provide you with real examples, this also gives you valuable experience of using the latest software tools valued by industry.
