Introduction

The aim of this unit is to provide you with an introduction to multimedia systems and processing - the manipulation, editing, analysis and generation of audio and visual data by computer. The material covered will provide you with a basic grounding in audio and image processing and graphics, as well as acquainting you with the skills necessary to understand and program multimedia systems. Particular attention will be paid to the practical aspects of the subject. On successful completion of this unit, you will:

Lectures and Lab Classes

Lectures are divided into the following four parts:

  1. Multimedia data, capture and representation - AC (1-3)
  2. Image and video processing - AC (4-8)
  3. Graphics and animation - MM (9-16)
  4. Audio and speech processing - EL (17-20)

Laboratory Classes

The practical content of the course will centre around laboratory classes which will take place in weeks 14-20. The classes will be supervised and will involve working through a number of exercises illustrating topics covered in the lectures. It is very important that you attend these classes and complete the laboratory exercises. Times, room numbers and groups can be found here

Assessment

The assessment will be in the form of two pieces of coursework and a written exam. The coursework will account for 30% and the exam 70% of the final mark for the unit. The coursework will be based on work completed during the laboratory classes. For details see the Unit web page.
