Public Computing Group
Overview
Members of the Public Computing Group share a common interest in researching human factors in Computing. The group is based in the Department of Computer Science but it has a unique interdisciplinary approach working closely with the Departments of Experimental Psychology, Drama, Archaeology and Electronic and Electrical Engineering. The group's main aims are:
- to carry out public trials with novel technologies so that we can understand how people interact with them.
- to use this understanding to develop new frameworks and models to guide the future of technology and technological experiences.
Current research interests include:
The Public Computing Group was formed to promote collaboration between researchers who share the same interests. It has close links with the Mobile and Wearable Group, the Graphics Group and recently the Robotics Group .The group has collaborated on research with many different universites and companies, to name a few:

COMS2XXXX Human-Computer
Interaction Unit
This unit introduces and explores systematic approaches to human factors in computer science. Human-computer interaction is a key issue to consider in the design and development of software, and in the evolution of technology policy and procedure. This unit considers a range of subjects in the field from user interface design to usability testing methodologies. We will address the design process, explore how to study user behaviour, and look at how others have produced theories to fit behavioural observations. Topics will include:
- The paradigmatic history of human-computer interaction
- Theories and frameworks of technology use
- Methods, methodologies and analysis techniques for studying people
- Techniques for graphical user interfaces and beyond
- An interface's usability and universality
- Tools and technologies supporting interaction design
- Student Projects in Public Computing
