In this paper we outline some recent developments in the study of abduction and induction and their role in scientific modelling and knowledge refinement. We also describe a central challenge that appears to be emerging from this study: namely, the problem of developing practical approaches for exploiting abduction and induction, of formally characterising the limitations of such approaches, and of identifying the classes of real-world problems to which they can be usefully applied.
