Information ystems of the future will be designed to incorporate high quality text-to-speech(TTS) systems. In this context high-quality refers to speech which is pleasant to listen to, sounds natural and is unambiguous. SPRUCE is a TTS system which has been designed to possess such characteristics. Particular features of SPRUCE are its modularity, its use of a comprehensive dictionary and its separation of high- and low-level sub-systems.
