Tilo Burghardt

Biography

Dr Tilo Burghardt holds a Lectureship in the Dept of Computer Science at the University of Bristol, UK. He graduated with Distinction in Media Computing (2002) at Dresden University of Technology (Germany). Subsequently, he received an MSc in Advanced Computing (2003) and PhD in Computer Vision (2008) from the University of Bristol (UK). He has been awarded fellowships of the Research Councils of the United Kingdom and the German Academic Foundation. His research focus is on Applied Computer Vision where he pioneered the interdisciplinary field of Visual Animal Biometrics. Applications of his work include the first vision systems that monitor animal populations in natural habitats. His research has reached out to the general public via the international press, science exhibitions and national television. He is co-chair of several international conferences including the British Machine Vision Conference 2013 and the International Penguin Conference 2013, both to be hosted in Bristol
