Raphael Clifford is the Reader in Algorithm Design and heads the Algorithms Team within the Intelligent Systems Laboratory. Historically his research has focussed on developing faster algorithms, and in particular, combinatorial pattern matching algorithms for massive data sets. More recently he has also worked on space and time lower bounds, providing for example the first provable separation between the complexity of exact and inexact matching in streaming data. He is currently on a five year EPSRC fellowship for a project entitled "Next generation pattern matching".
