(20 July 99) List of Participants
(20 July 99) Programme of Presentations

SCOPE of WORKSHOP

Programme and Proceedings Available! UKPEW is the leading UK forum for the presentation of all aspects of performance modelling and analysis of computer and telecommunication systems. Original papers are invited on all relevant topics but papers on or related to the subjects listed below are particularly welcome.

  • Stochastic modelling of computer systems and networks.
  • Tools for all aspects of performance engineering from workload characterisation to operational analysis.
  • Modelling paradigms including, but not limited to: Stochastic Process Algebras, Stochastic Petri Nets and Queueing Theory.
  • Solution and simplification techniques for large Markov processes.
  • Formal notations for performance modelling.
  • Modelling and analysis of reliability and performance guarantees.
  • Performance-oriented design methods.
  • Novel techniques in computer system simulation.
  • Case studies and industrial reports.
  • Experience and evaluation of existing tools and techniques.

WORKSHOP FORMAT and VENUE

Churchill Hall - Conference VenueThis workshop is the primary event at which the UK performance community can get together to present and discuss their work. Whilst primarily aimed at UK based performance engineers, we also welcome contributions from researchers working in other countries and those whose interest in performance is derived from experience in other fields. It provides an ideal opportunity for academics, industrialists and PhD students to relate experience and to present both finished work and work in progress. The event has been organised to sustain the atmosphere of informality that previous UKPEW's have fostered. As well as sessions for presenting the papers submitted, it will also be possible to organise a session of short presentations of work in progress. Similarly, we will also be able to organise tool demonstrations, on request; please contact a member of the organising committee as early as possible with your requirements.

The workshop will start at about 9am, Thursday 22nd July and finish at roughly 4.30pm Friday 23rd July; there will be a workshop dinner on the Thursday night.

The workshop will take place in the wood-panelled common room of Churchill Hall, with accommodation being provided on-site. The Hall itself is situated just off Durdham Downs within 10-15 minutes of the centre of Bristol and has its own grounds with adjoining arboretum. It provides excellent accommodation with a choice of room facilities; private or shared bathroom, internet access points in room (if required) as well as individual telephone lines.

Churchill also boasts its own library, bar and dining hall for buffets and dinners. Internet access is also provided from a terminal room, accessible throughout the workshop.

REGISTRATION

Registration cost includes attendance for the two day workshop, a copy of the proceedings, buffet lunches on Thursday and Friday and tea/coffee and biscuits in breaks between sessions:

Registration + Conference Dinner (22nd July): £88.00
Registration + Two nights accommodation (21st/22nd July) + Conference Dinner (22nd July): £106.00
(Private bathroom is £15.00 extra)
Registration + Three nights accommodation (21st-23rd July) + Conference Dinner (22nd July): £127.00
(Private bathroom is £23.00 extra)

It would hugely helpful if you registered online as early as convenient using our secure registration system. Payment is currently by credit card, cheque or internal transfer and involves the following procedure: you fill out the online form and you will be automatically emailed a payment form which you can return by post or fax, depending on how you wish to pay. (Online credit card registration now available). When you select the link above to register, you will be asked whether you wish to accept the certificate for our server - for your information and if you wish to check, the certificate has the id fingerprint 3F:30:3E:58:4D:0A:F7:4D:A3:0B:D0:A1:4A:02:00:24

Alternatively if you wish to register many people at once or cannot get access to our secure sever then a text version of the registration form is available. We would appretiate it if you mail us and tell us how many people you intend to register if you use this method. Thank you for your help.

INFORMATION for AUTHORS

Online Proceedings! Papers will be accepted on the basis of an extended abstract (3-6 pages) or draft paper (8-12 pages) which should be submitted to ukpew99-papers@cs.bris.ac.uk no later than 14th May 1999. Electronic submission is preferred. Notification of acceptance will be given by 1st June together with instructions for the preparation of camera-ready copy.

The presented papers will be published in proceedings, which will be available at the workshop for all delegates. The proceedings have an ISBN and will also be made available as an on-line publication of the Department of Computer Science. In order for the proceedings to be ready in time, the deadline for the acceptance of complete papers complying with the camera-copy instructions will be 2nd July. Registration should be submitted as soon as possible.

The format of the workshop will be as follows: there will be 25 paper presentations of about 25 minutes in length as well as (approximately) 15 poster presentations which will take place during the breaks.

HOW to GET to BRISTOL

Here are some directions to Churchill Hall, once you've got to Bristol.

Here is a more detailed map that will be useful for finding the venue.

A bus service exists from Bristol International Airport to Temple Meads railway station; it will be a lot cheaper than a taxi, for getting into Bristol. Once at Temple Meads Churchill is only 10 minutes away by taxi or another bus will take you up onto Durdham Downs and right past Churchill.
